Do You Tip Your Wedding Photographer in the UK?
No. In the UK you are not expected to tip your wedding photographer, and no photographer will think less of you if you don't. Their fee is meant to cover the whole job, including editing. If you want to say thank you, a meal on the day, a kind review and a recommendation usually mean more than cash.
Is tipping your wedding photographer expected in the UK?
No. Unlike the US, the UK has no fixed convention. UK wedding photographer Yana Skakun explains that a UK package price is built to be a complete fee, covering time on the day, editing, equipment and insurance, so a tip is not part of the calculation. One Fab Day found something similar when it asked its Instagram audience, and 82% said you should not tip wedding suppliers. Most photographers are self-employed, so the fee you pay already goes to them, minus their costs.
How much do couples give if they do tip?
There is no standard figure. Yana Skakun says couples who choose to tip usually give somewhere between £50 and £150 for one photographer covering a full day, and plenty give less or nothing. Paul Mindy Photography gives a smaller range of £20 to £50 for a small gesture. Treat these as examples of what some couples do, not as a rule. If you do tip, put it in a separate envelope and give it to a bridesmaid, best man or venue coordinator to hand over, so you don't have to remember it on the day.
When does a tip feel most appropriate?
Usually when someone has gone beyond the contract. That could be a photographer who stayed past the agreed finish time without charging extra, kept working calmly through bad weather, or handled a tricky family moment with tact. If a second photographer or assistant worked hard alongside the lead, a small tip or a named thank-you in your card is a good way to recognise people you may not have spoken to much. Check your contract first, because some photographers include a service fee in their package already.
What are the best ways to thank your photographer without a tip?
Feed them. Photographers often work eight to twelve hours on their feet, so a proper meal during the reception matters. Our guide to whether you have to feed your wedding photographer explains how to sort it out with your venue and caterer. After that, leave a specific, honest review once your gallery arrives and pass their name on to friends who are getting married. Reviews help a small business far more than a single tip.
Where does tipping fit in your wedding budget?
Treat it as an optional extra and not a line you have to fund. If money is tight, skip it and put your energy into a good review and a thank-you card.
