How do you choose a wedding photographer?
Choose a wedding photographer by looking at whole wedding galleries, checking that their style matches how you want the day to feel, and making sure the practical details are clear in writing. Meeting them, or at least speaking to them, matters as much as the portfolio. You will spend more of your wedding day with your photographer than with almost any guest.
Start with whole galleries, not highlights
A portfolio shows a photographer's best frames. A complete gallery shows how they cope with a full day: the quiet morning, the ceremony in awkward light, the crowded drinks reception, the evening. Ask to see at least one full wedding from start to finish. If the photographer has shot at a venue similar to yours, even better.
Decide what style you actually want
Most photographers sit somewhere between documentary and more directed, editorial work. Neither is better. Think about how you want to remember the day. If you want honest moments with light direction for portraits, look for someone who works that way. Our guide to documentary versus editorial wedding photography explains the difference in more detail.
Check availability early
Good photographers book up well ahead of the date. If you have a date and a venue, ask about availability before you fall in love with anyone. Our guide on how far in advance to book a wedding photographer covers the timing.
Understand what the price includes
Compare quotes on the same footing. Ask when coverage starts and ends, whether a second photographer is included, how travel is handled, when the preview and full gallery arrive, and whether an album is part of the price. Our cost guide to wedding photography in the UK breaks down what a full-day collection includes. You can also read why some couples choose a second photographer.
Talk to them before you book
Personality counts. You will be photographed at your most emotional moments, so you want someone calm, clear and easy to be around. A short call or meeting tells you more than any website. If you are nervous about being photographed, say so. A good photographer will know how to help.
Read the agreement
Before you pay a deposit, check the agreement covers the date, coverage hours, delivery times, what happens if the photographer is unwell, and how payments work. Our article on what happens if your wedding photographer is ill on the day lists the questions worth asking.
