What Happens After You Book Your Wedding Photographer?

Booking your wedding photographer is one of the big ticks on the planning list. Once the contract is signed and the booking fee is paid, things can go quiet for a while, and that quiet can feel strange. Here is what the months in between can look like.

What happens straight after you book?

Check that you have completed the booking steps in your photographer's terms, and keep written confirmation of the agreed date and coverage. If your photographer sends a questionnaire or a welcome note at this stage, fill it in when you can. The details it collects, like names, addresses and contact numbers, are what the rest of the planning hangs off. After that, you are free to get on with the rest of the list.

Do you need to do anything in between?

Not much, and that is the nice part. Carry on planning as normal, and let your photographer know if anything big changes: a new venue, a different ceremony time, a moved date. The smaller decisions do not need a photographer's input, so you can safely leave those out of the email. If something will affect the timings, the light or the locations, it is worth a message.

When do you talk through the details of the day?

Closer to the wedding, expect a proper conversation about how the day will run: when you are getting ready, when the ceremony starts, which group photos you want, and any moments that matter to you. You might get a details form a few months out, a planning call in the final weeks, or both. This is the conversation that turns your plans into a timeline, and it is the one worth preparing for.

When is the remaining balance due?

That one lives in your contract, so check the date it sets and put a reminder in your diary. If paying in instalments would help, ask your photographer whether that is something they can do before you assume either way.

What if you have questions in the meantime?

Ask them. You do not need to wait for a scheduled check-in. A question about timings, an idea you cannot decide on, a worry about the weather - send it over. Answering questions from couples is part of the job. And if the final weeks are getting close and you have heard nothing, it is completely fair to start that conversation yourself.

If you are still at the choosing stage and have questions about how it all works, drop me a message.
