How Do You Plan Wedding Photos for a Summer Wedding?

Summer wedding photos can be beautiful, but strong sun and hot weather need a little more planning than simply stepping outside and hoping for the best.

The short answer is to plan around three things: the light, the temperature and how long people are being asked to stand outside. A few small decisions can make the photo part of the day feel much easier.

What makes summer wedding photos different?

High summer sun can create strong shadows, bright backgrounds and squinting faces. Heat can also change how people feel in front of the camera, especially if they are wearing formal clothes or standing outside for a long stretch.

That does not mean bright weather is a problem. It just means your photographer needs to think carefully about where you stand, which way you face and when the main outdoor photographs happen. Photographer Emma Lowe makes the same point in her summer wedding photography guide: even light and guest comfort matter as much as the sunshine itself.

How do you plan around harsh midday light?

If your ceremony or drinks reception falls in the middle of the day, look for open shade rather than asking everyone to face the sun. The side of a building, a covered doorway or a consistent patch of tree shade can work well.

Tree shade needs a quick check, because light coming through leaves can leave bright patches across faces and clothing. Your photographer can judge that on the day, but it helps if they already know which parts of the venue you love.

For couple portraits, ask whether a short later window is possible. Our guide to the best time of day for wedding photos goes into more detail, but the simple version is this: softer light later in the day can be more comfortable to stand in than full midday sun.

What should you do if it is hot?

Start with the basics. Make water easy to find, use shade where you can and avoid leaving people outside longer than they need to be.

The NHS hot-weather advice recommends staying out of the heat where possible, using shade, wearing sunscreen and having regular cold drinks. On a wedding day, that can mean parasols, a shaded waiting area, water near the ceremony space and somewhere cool for anyone who needs a break.

If anyone feels unwell in the heat, treat that as more important than the photo schedule. Move them somewhere cool and follow current medical advice.

How can you keep guests comfortable during photos?

Keep group photos organised and close to where people already are. A shaded spot near the drinks reception is usually easier than moving everyone across the venue in full sun.

It also helps to avoid stacking every outdoor formality together. After an outdoor ceremony and confetti, guests may want water, shade and a few minutes to settle before family photos begin. UK photographer Adept Imagery’s hot-weather wedding advice makes the useful point that guests experience those outdoor moments as one long stretch, not as separate five-minute items.

If you are planning an outdoor ceremony, our guide to planning photos for an outdoor ceremony covers the venue questions that affect the photographs.

What should you ask your photographer about a summer wedding?

Ask how they handle bright sun, where they might place family photos and whether they see a good later window for couple portraits. You can also ask what happens if the weather changes, because a summer day still needs a wet-weather plan. Our guide to what happens if it rains on your wedding day is a useful companion read.

The goal is not to build the day around photography. It is to make a few sensible choices so the setting, the people and the photographs all get the best chance to work together.

If you are planning a summer wedding and want photography that fits around the day rather than taking it over, tell us about your plans.
