What Happens if It Rains on Your Wedding Day?
Rain doesn't ruin wedding photos. With a wet-weather plan, clear umbrellas and a photographer who is happy to work with the weather, you can still get beautiful, atmospheric pictures.
What happens if it rains on your wedding day?
Your day carries on, and so do the photographs. Rain changes where some photos happen, not whether they happen. Portraits move to sheltered spots or indoors, and a lot of the day (getting ready, the ceremony, speeches, dancing) is usually inside anyway.
Can you still get good wedding photos in the rain?
Yes. Overcast skies give soft, even light that flatters skin and faces. Wet ground, raindrops on windows and umbrellas add mood you don't get on a bright day. Showers also pass, and a clearing sky afterwards often gives dramatic light.
Where do rainy day portraits happen?
Typically under porches and covered entrances, by large windows, in barns or doorways, and under tree canopies once the rain eases. It helps if your photographer knows your venue, or looks at it ahead of the day, so they have wet-weather spots in mind before you need them.
Do clear umbrellas help?
They do. Clear or white umbrellas look neat in photos, keep logos and bright colours out of the frame, and still let your faces show. Have enough for the couple and wedding party, and make sure someone is in charge of bringing them rather than leaving them in a car.
What should you plan for before the day?
Ask your venue what the backup is for an outdoor ceremony or drinks reception. Pack flat shoes or wellies for walking outside, and check what your hair and makeup can handle in damp weather. If you're in a marquee or tipi, think about walkways, flooring and parking so guests aren't dealing with mud.
Should you change your timeline for rain?
Stay flexible. Rain rarely lasts all day, so short bursts of outdoor photos between showers often work better than one long session. Leave a little extra time around the ceremony and portraits in case you need to wait for a break. Family groups can usually be done indoors where everyone stays warm.
What about confetti and group photos?
Some venues allow confetti indoors, and a staged confetti moment with a few guests can work if the weather clears briefly. Large group photos can go in a hallway, a barn or under a canopy, so ask your venue which spaces are available.
