Is an Engagement Shoot Worth It?
An engagement shoot is optional, but it is worth it if you're nervous in front of a camera or want to know your photographer before the day. It gives you a relaxed practice run, a chance to give feedback, and a set of photos you can use for save the dates or a welcome sign.
Do you need an engagement shoot?
No. It isn't required, and plenty of couples skip it and still get great wedding photographs. It helps most if you don't enjoy being photographed, or if you haven't met your photographer in person yet.
What are the benefits of an engagement shoot?
You get used to the camera before your wedding day, when the timeline is tighter. Your photographer sees how you two interact and learns how to direct you. You also find out what you like and don't like in your photos, and you can say so before the wedding. Some couples use the same day to test hair and makeup.
How long does an engagement shoot take?
Usually around an hour, sometimes a little more if you're moving between locations. Keep it short and relaxed. A shoot that feels like a walk and a chat tends to look better than one that feels like a photo marathon.
When should you book an engagement shoot?
Anywhere from a few months to a few weeks before the wedding works. Book it early enough to use the photos for save the dates or invitations, and late enough that you still remember what you want to change. Autumn and winter light fades early in the UK, so plan for late morning or early afternoon.
Where should you have it?
Somewhere you like spending time together: a favourite park, a local street, a coastal walk or even home. A familiar place helps you relax. If you want a preview of your venue, ask whether it allows visits and photography before the day.
What should you wear?
Wear what you'd happily wear on a nice day out, in colours that suit you both and don't clash. Avoid big logos. If you want a second look, bring a spare layer. Comfortable shoes matter more than you'd think.
How do you get the most out of it?
Tell your photographer what you hope to get from the session and which photos you dread. Don't try to pose. Walk, talk and let it happen, because moving is what makes people look natural. Afterwards, tell them what you liked.
What does it cost?
Prices vary by photographer, and some include a session in a wedding package while others charge separately. Ask what is included when you enquire. For the wedding side of the budget, see our guide to wedding photography cost in the UK.
