Should You Ask to See a Full Wedding Gallery Before Booking?
Yes, always. Before you book any wedding photographer, ask to see at least one full wedding gallery, not just the highlights on their website or Instagram. A portfolio shows you the best thirty frames of a year. A full gallery shows you the whole day, and the whole day is what you are actually buying.
What a highlight reel never tells you
Every photographer's best work looks good. That is the point of a portfolio. What it cannot show is consistency: whether the getting-ready photos are as strong as the portraits, whether dark ceremony rooms and dim dance floors are handled well, whether the in-between moments are caught or missed. Anyone can produce thirty beautiful frames across a summer. The question is what the other several hundred look like.
What to look for in a full gallery
Consistency through the day. Morning preparations, ceremony, drinks, speeches, dancing: the standard should hold from first photo to last, not dip after the portraits.
Difficult light. Dark churches, windowless rooms, evening receptions. A full gallery shows how a photographer copes when the light stops helping.
Moments, not just portraits. If a gallery is mostly posed couple shots, ask where the guests are. The hugs, the laughing, the tears during the speeches: those are the photos you will treasure, and they cannot be staged.
People like yours. Guests of every age, in every state of celebration. You are looking for the day as it will actually feel, not a styled shoot.
How many galleries should you ask for?
Two or three is sensible, ideally including a wedding similar to yours: same season, similar venue, an indoor ceremony if yours will be. One gallery could be a lucky day. Three is a pattern. If you are planning something specific, ask for a match: a winter wedding, a marquee, a city ceremony.
What a good photographer says when you ask
"Of course, which would you like to see?" Asking for full galleries is one of the questions worth asking before you book, and no established photographer will be surprised or reluctant. If someone hesitates, that is an answer too. This one request tells you more than any comparison of styles and packages ever will.
You can see what we mean: a full real wedding day, start to finish, is here in Lucy and Michael's complete wedding gallery, and their day also features as a story on our journal. If you would like to see a full gallery from a wedding that looks like yours, just ask.
The bottom line
Highlights sell the dream. Full galleries show the reality. Ask for them early, look for consistency across the whole day, and book the photographer whose ordinary frames are as good as their best ones.
